Grampa's Birth Certificate
Diaspora, emotional diaspora?
I don't have many words or much information. Maybe the memories of leaving Eastern Europe were too painful (and that was before WW2.) I just know three things for sure. Grandpa Morris and I believe all his siblings were born at home in the tenement house on Ludlow Street. Grandpa Morris told me you could smell the poverty. I also know he and the family moved to the Bronx hoping for a better life.
Both my Mom's parents talked about the Great Depression and Grampa Morris was lucky enough to be employed by the United States Postal Service in the Bronx. My grandmother's family had a successful business involving windows I believe. No doubt that life has improved for all of us since life on Ludlow. How ironic, it looks like a luxury hotel is being built right in the spot where my maternal grandfather was born!
