The Log Homestead
My object is a log homestead. It is located exactly two miles west of Novinger, near Danforth in Illinois. The town Novinger is named after my family. The homestead is now a museum, but my ancestors used to live in it. My family meets there for family reunions. The log cabin smells like old wood. The logs are very rough. The log homestead is brown/tan. It has windows and a door frame.
The history behind the log homestead is that it was built around 1848. The home belonged to Isaac and Christina who were the parents of 13 children. One of the children died in infancy. They also raised Jonas Shott’s children when their mother died. The log homestead was built out of wood/logs. There was an attic and a ground level. The children slept in the attic.
The log homestead is important to me because it reminds me of my family in the present and in the past. When it was my first time in the log homestead it was very fascinating. It reminded me of the book called Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I learned lots of history behind the log homestead and the people who lived there. The log homestead also represents my family because it is a meeting spot and many of our family members come to visit one another and talk and they travel from far away. I feel it is very important to make sure our family remembers this location and for every family reunion we come to this spot.
