Sancocho
My dish is a stew from my culture that’s very common. A stew called Sancocho. This stew is a mixture of vegetables, meats, and starches. The most common ingredients are chicken, pork, beef, potatoes, yuca, (a kind of root similar to a potato) plantains carrots, corn on the cob, and garlic. It also has spices and herbs like cilantro, oregano, salt and pepper. This stew is usually eaten with white rice and avocado on the side. Both my grandmothers from Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico have made this dish multiple times.I chose this dish because it reminds me of my family, our culture, and the good times we’ve spent together. This dish can also teach about the kinds of spices, herbs, and foods we eat in my culture. My great grandma (who still lives) came in the 1960’s to America from Dominican Republic. Now she’s 91 years old, and lived here ever since then. I can just imagine her coming from her country to America and having a big bowl of Sancocho after.A few things that I would like to ask my great grandma are how did you make Sancocho? Or how do you make it taste SOOOO GOOD!!!!??Lastly, Sancocho is a common stew in my culture but a priceless dish in my heart.
