Jubba
Jubba

My artifact is a Jubba. It was in my closet for a long time. This piece of attire had no meaning. But when I told my mom my teacher told me I needed an artifact my mom took out the this unfamiliar piece of clothing. I asked my mom, “Why did you take this piece of shirt? What am I going to say about my culture with this?” I felt I was going to have a hard time with the immigrant project. My mom was calm and answered me with a soft voice, “This belonged to your father, Aryan.” He got it from Bangladesh when he was 12. He would be proud to see you wear it. He took this long shirt to America to remember his country and to have a chance to practice his religion. In Bangladesh men wear the jubba during religious holidays such as Eid. Also every Friday we have a special prayer called Jumu’ah. On that day the men wear similar attire and pray together. In my religion we believe that it’s best praying with this jubba.”
I felt very proud that my father kept his jubba that he wore when he was ten years so I could share the memories with my Mom.
