English Trolls
My object is two troll dolls that come from England. They belonged to my great-grandmother, who traveled a lot. She traveled to England and bought these. My great-grandma brought them to add to her collection of troll dolls. When she died she left her collection to my mom. The jewels the trolls are holding sparkle and change color in the light. They have three toes on each foot and four fingers on each hand. Trolls originally come from Sweden (and I am also from Sweden), but other countries have their own versions. These trolls look like humans, but have bigger body parts. Big feet, ears, noses, big teeth. Trolls are mythological creatures from books and some movies. Trolls from different countries tend to look different. This is what they look like in England. American trolls from the 1990s’ were very popular and looked a lot like humans. They had fuzzy, funny colored hair (pink, blue, purple, orange, red, yellow). This is something a troll chanted in a story: *They call me a troll, Moon of the earth Hrungnir wealth sucker of the giant, destroyer of storm-sun beloved follower of the seeress, guardian of the Nafjiord swallower of the wheel of heaven (the sun). What is a troll if not that?*This is one of many translations of the old original Norse version. This object is important to me because I learned something new about my great-grandma, about my family’s culture, and more about trolls.
