Chop (stamp)
My artifact is called a Chop it comes from China. A Chop is used as a stamp. It is also used to seal envelopes. People use it to sign art, contracts, and other personal documents. This specific Chop is a horse. The horse is my mom’s Chinese zodiac. A Chinese zodiac is an animal that represents the year you were born in. For example I was born in 2005 so, I am the year of the rooster. When you stamp the chop, it shows my mom’s name Helen and her name in Chinese writing. My mom got it when she went to China. My artifact is made of jade and soapstone. You can find these in metal, wood, bamboo, and soapstone. They used Jade because it is sturdy, but it is a hard material to work with. Jade is important in the Chinese culture. Jade is a symbol of wealth (money). Many pieces of artwork and jewelry are made of jade. This artifact is from the 1900’s but people used it since the 3rd century B.C.E in china. It is important to my culture and the culture of the Chinese people.
